Last night fifty kids showed up for the “Ninja Star Throwing Clinic.” The staff divided the masses into groups of five or six, according to age and rank, and each group lined up and practiced throwing the stars at targets outlined on the mirrors with liquid chalk. It looked like a lot of fun, and I sort of regretted not signing up.
Well, this morning I got my chance after all. Those of us who presented ourselves for weapons training were given three stars each, and we spent nearly an hour practicing. Toward the end Heidi and Mark were spending more time throwing the stars at each other than at the targets, but it was all in good fun.
There is a trick to getting the little suction cups on the stars to stick to the glass: the star has to spin flat, like a Frisbee. I never quite mastered the technique. Of course, last night most of the kids had no trouble with it at all.
Now all I have to do is figure out where my grandson and I can practice this at home without breaking something.
Hello! It's so great to see a blog about karate, one of my favorite activities! I don't go anymore, but after reading this, I really want to start back up again. I am currently a red belt also...I look forward to reading more, so keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words! I think it would be great if you started going to karate again, even if has been a long time since your last class. It seems fairly common for people to take a hiatus, sometimes for a few months, sometimes for a few years, and then return. The main thing is to come back. Of course you would have to expect a fairly steep learning curve at first, and your body may yell at you, but it would be worth any frustration or discomfort. I hope that when I hear from you again you can tell me how great you're doing. Good for you!
