Even the adults are expected to turn in their goals sheet. In the past I have simply printed my list on plain paper, but this year I'm getting a little more glamorous and putting them into a booklet with illustrations. This actually started out as a joke, when a couple of parents and I were looking at a very handsome goals poster that had just been handed in. Somebody asked me if I was going to try to top that, and I said, sure, I'll do mine in counted cross-stitch or something. Well, that's not going to happen! But a booklet I can handle.
As for the goals themselves, I really do try to keep them in mind all year long. I keep a copy in my nightstand and look at it once in a while before I go to sleep. Two years ago, these were my goals:
1. Build upper body strength to permit occasional full regular pushups.
2. Lose two inches from waistline.
3. Attend classes three times a week.
4. Increase knee range of motion (flexion) to permit controlled falls.
5. Participate in at least two tournaments.
6. Win at least one sparring match at a tournament.
7. Memorize required Il Soo Sik and Ho Sin Sul sequences.
8. Earn promotion to Red Belt.
9. Invite other adults to try karate, by personal contact, by writing magazine or newsletter articles, or by establishing a blog.
10. Maintain a positive attitude toward the school, students, and instructors, and by example encourage other parents to do the same.
I didn't achieve all these goals in 2007, but I kept working on them, and now at the end of 2008 I can say with some surprise that I have achieved them all.
I wonder how long it will take me to achieve this year's goals!
