This morning after class I asked permission to stay late and practice my one-step sparring (see Mirror, Mirror). We had spent a few minutes on it in class, and I did fairly well, but I wanted to take the time to really nail it for once if I could. I went up close to the mirror so I could really pay attention to details.
I went slowly through the first routine (Il Soo Sik Dae Ryun Il Ban) and right away I realized that my technique was really sloppy. I tried to tighten it up without much success. But then I thought, “Suppose I was trying to teach this to somebody else. How would I do it?”
Immediately it was like the proverbial light bulb going off in my head. Movements that had previously seemed unconnected suddenly flowed. Weight transfers made sense. I was doing it right!
I used the same approach to all fourteen of my required one-steps, pausing occasionally to ask Mr. Decker for clarification (like “In #9, do I end with a side stance or a Hu Gul stance?”). For each one, I started very slowly and worked my way through until I was approaching normal speed.
