This morning in class I was practicing the portion of Chil Sung Sa Rho Hyung that I have been taught (a little less than half the form). After a while Kyo Sa Nim asked me if I was ready to learn a few more moves. It occurred to me that when I was first introduced to the form, even five or six moves seemed impossible to learn. Learning the next few moves was also challenging; the string of things to remember seemed insurmountably long. I did learn it, however, and now the part that I know seems very short.
Maybe this is another meaning for Wan Gup, one of the Eight Key Concepts in Tang Soo Do. Commonly interpreted as "Speed Control," it can be literally translated as "Slow-Fast." But maybe it can refer to this phenomenon where time seems to speed up or slow down depending on circumstances. Movies show us this all the time, using slow-motion and stop-action camera techniques. But it does happen in real life, as I found out this morning.
